A really evocative piece. I think more mystery stories should be less about the puzzle of a mystery and more about what drives people to do the things they do. The way that women understand what it's like to be woman, the unfinished business behind a murder. I really enjoyed this.

had to read for class. didn’t really enjoy it that much, lol. good for girls sticking up for each other though. like the irony of the men being sexist and yet, they couldn’t piece anything together like the women did

I would love it if the two women in this story had become recurring characters. I hope Mrs. Wright got away with it.

This novella is hardcore. It had me bewildered at first, angry in the middle, sorrowful in the end and conflicted by its conclusion. The men who bandy about thinking they're better than the little ladies did what they were supposed to do--infuriate you. The women who saw the home/crime scene also did what they were supposed to do--get you to see and empathize with the story that wasn't being told. And by the end, though you understand exactly what happened; exactly what went down in that house not just the night of the fateful event, but every night, you're not sure what should be done. Because justice is justice, right? But where is her justice? Who comes in to right the wrongs that are done in very "small" ways every day? Do we make our own justice? Should we? Or should we follow the law(s) that are blind to the truths?

...I don't know... 5/5.

A powerful short story from 1917! An investigation of a rural murder where the victim’s wife is the presumed murderer. While clearly of its time,(I would hope that most men these days have moved on from the attitudes of the men here!) it still strongly resonated with me particularly as domestic violence is so prevalent in today’s society.
