This book has 256 pages and 240 instances of using the word 'snow'.. The only reason it isn't 1 star is cause I'm saving that for the absolute worst book of all time. If it doesn't come, this one might get the title from me.

This book hooked me right from the beginning. It follows the case of a missing child and the woman who is helping to find her. I felt connected to all of the characters and how the back stories where weaved in to the plot. Excellent writing! Obviously a very dark topic so watch trigger warnings.
Graphic: Emotional abuse, Child death, Child abuse, Kidnapping, and Sexual violence

Audio managed wonderfully by Alyssa Bresnahan. Empathy extended to nearly all characters. Author took some care with sensitive and terrible areas to avoid over exploitation and obvious paths. However, narrative thread with characters from marginalized, underprivileged background should have been handled better.
Moderate: Rape, Pedophilia, and Kidnapping

I really enjoyed this book! Tough subject matter, but it was a page turner. I liked the mystery of it & how everything came together.

Maybe I'm one of the few, but I was disappointed by this book. The protagonist detective barely does any true sleuthing. Most of the story is focused on the relationship or lack thereof between her and a character named Jerome. The missing child pretty much rescues herself in the end.

Denfeld's writing glows like an ember in a dark forest: a subtle but powerful light of hope and beauty amidst all the shadows. In other words, she takes a hard, disturbing story about child abuse and makes it beautiful through its emotional potency, her sensitive exploration of the characters, the haunting atmosphere and the lyricism of her prose. All while simultaneously delivering an unputdownable tale of suspense. It transported me; when I finished I had to place the book on my lap and just gaze into space for a bit, slowly resurfacing from where I'd gone.
