I thought that this would be a solid 3 star read, but I have a rule that any book that makes me cry is automatically 4 so here we are. I think Katherine Center and TJR have similar writing styles, which is probably what's keeping me from enjoying these books as much as I want to. Cassie's "not like other girls" persona really annoyed me at the start, but that is really well woven into how her trauma has manifested itself and her journey to forgiveness is honestly incredible. Does it lack subtlety and tells us about her development rather than show it? Yeah, but it works for this writing. While the romance is more developed here than in The Bodyguard, I still wanted more of it.

** spoiler alert ** I really did like this book. It was about growth. About growing up, letting go of your demons opening up your heart to love in all it's many forms and finding family both blood and found.

The thing that was holding me back from 5 stars is I never really super connected with Owen. Like I wanted Cassie to be happy. But if she hadn't have ended up with Owen I would have been fine. That's how little stock I held in him/them as a couple.

I did love Cassie as a character I loved her relationship with her mom although I love slow burn and kind of wish that had been drawn out a little more. But it was a fairly short book so I understand.

I loved all that Cassie learned and how hard she worked but I also loved watching her learn to let go and live for something other than her job.
