I cannot believe I finished this.

WHAT I LOVED:

MAVEN - please don't ask why because i don't know. he's my favorite character and even though he only showed up like three times in this book, he was still my favorite.
SHADE - he deserved better
MARE'S DAD
JULIAN
JON
THE NEWBLOODS
CAL - i can't not admit that he was incredibly boring to me at first. but he's grown on me. especially when he put Mare in her place.

WHAT I HATED:

MARE - you're probably sick of listening to me rant about how much i hate Mare Barrow but i can't help it. i might have given this book a three if not for her horrible attitude. if she wasn't bragging about how powerful and important she was on every page, she going back and forth between feeling guilty for the many crimes she committed and then blaming them on everyone else. she is probably the worst character i have had the displeasure of reading about all year long. or at least so far.

I couldn't stop reading this book but I'm deeply disappointed in one thing the author didn't elaborate about... How Mare is supposedly so close with Shade- it has been mentioned multiple times in the first book and in this one, I have yet to read anything to prove that. That's frustrating because Shade has a bigger presence in this book and I was totally looking forward to see how solid Mare and Shade supposedly were.

Nothing happened in this book. Usually a dystopia that meanders as much as this one would raise moral issues and reveal human nature in some way, but not this one. No, it's all about how dark and tortured and alone our main protagonist is, in a way that does not show, but tells over and over again by rubbing it into your face while shouting louder every time you roll your eyes at how melodramatic Mare is.

SpoilerAnd now she's been kidnapped I can only imagine how much more time she'll have in the next book to lament who she's supposedly become and how much she's changed when there's no pesky 'saving newbloods' and 'planning a revolution' bullshit to get in her whiny way. Bonus points for how much she's going to moan about how conflicted she is over Maven because she loves him but not the real him, and all that jazz that we were treated to many times over in this book already.

the immature language, whiny MC, and SLOW plot line killed me. I tried my best and honestly I loved the first novel of this series so this is a huge disappointment
