Not a great first Superman book, I have learned… But it’s still great

It was a boring book and not easy to understand since everything happened so fast. The story was messy and it was hard to follow it since two entirely different things could happen in the chapters, and there was barely any explanation for what was going on. I don’t know if it’s just me who doesn’t understand because this is the first Superman comic I’ve read, but I feel like it should be easier to understand either way.

Grant Morrison is not always a sure fire hit for me. But Frank Quitely's art is always fascinating. Together they make the perfect Superman marriage. This has got to be hands down the best stuff on Superman I've ever read. It simultaneously harkens back to an earlier sentimental time for the hero while spicing things up with terrorist bombers, cloning and other newer technologies. The best part and the reason Morrison is at the top of his form here is the characters in this series. These are the characters we all grew up with, and Morrison knows them like the back of his hand. Sure, Morrison goes on about the Underverse and paralllel time streams just as he always does, but with these characters, he is practically forced to leave time for the little moments - the human minutes of their day. How Morrison manages to cram all the Superman expectations into just 12 collected issues is a feat to be wondered in itself? Parasite, Bizarro Superman, Lex Luthor, Jimmy Olsen saving Superman - and it never seems to jam packed with plot to overwhelm the characters. Superman is given a majestic, sweeping story with a quiet elegy at it's core.

Meh. I'm not sure what all the fuss was about. I'm not much of a Superman fan, or a DC in general for that matter, and I had high hopes for this. I thought be a breakthrough to explore beyond Batman and the Vertigo books but it was not to be. I just connect with it. And that Bizarro chapter was painful.

This is definitely my favourite representation of Superman I've come across so far in comics. Where I usually find Superman bland and overpowered, this book helps present the immense responsibility Superman feels, and still manages to make the the man of steel actually likeable.

As for every other character, I feel as though everyone else in the series has to be written dumb for me to believe that Superman's disguise as Clark Kent works at this point in the life of the character. I appreciated that Quitely drew Kent to look physically different from Superman, but God does it still bug me just how willfully the people of the Daily Planet deny that Clark Kent is Superman.

I don't want to be annoyed by Lois Lane, but here we are.
