Allende writes a heck of story, but whether it's a translation issue or a style issue, she relies so much on telling, not showing. There were big chunks of history that completely took me out of the narrative, to the detriment of the novel. Her big reveal - that children from the kindertransport and children at the border today are connected - fell a little flat because of some of the writing. Ultimately, I wanted to be more invested in the characters than I was.
