There is a lot to love in this book. An interesting fantasy world with complicated politics, a bloody revolution with morally grey characters on both sides, a competitive dragon-riding school setting, characters with serious trauma who face moral dilemmas and have complex interpersonal relationships, and an emotional romance that doesn't feel childish or like insta-love.
Everything that I wanted Fourth Wing to be, which failed hard on every aspect that this book did so well. I'm so glad that Reads With Rachel on YT recommended Fireborne as an alternative book that focuses on a dragon-riding school and is actually written well and has a well thought out world.
It does feel a bit like a toned down Games of Thrones, but with less explicit violence, no sexual assault, and focused on just one setting and two characters, not jumping around an entire continent and 25 different POVs.
I absolutely loved it, and I really want to continue the series.

I wasn’t that invested for over half of the book but the last section sold me. And I’m looking forward to continuing with the trilogy.

This is yet another book that has gotten me to tear up.

Excellent fantasy with complex political intrigue that didn’t fall into obvious good vs evil “sides”. The character development was excellent and I enjoyed both POVs. I liked that it wasn’t romance-heavy, especially in a world/situation with such high stakes. The dragons were an interesting element in this world too, and I hope the next books expand more on the dragon and rider relationship. The only thing that keeps it from 5 stars from me is that it definitely felt like a book that is meant to be a build up to the next books in the series. Even the big final scene in the book was a little short and anticlimactic after all the events that led it there. I’m excited to read the next one!

Fireborne by Rosario Munda is an enthralling fantasy novel that left me eager for more. The plot is a masterful tapestry of political intrigue, friendship, and self-discovery that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Annie and Lee, our central characters, showcase incredible resilience in the face of a world filled with power struggles and secrets. Their evolution throughout the story is nothing short of amazing.

One aspect I particularly enjoyed was the psychic connection with the dragons. It added a unique layer to the bond between dragonriders and their mounts, making the story more immersive. However, I wished the dragons themselves had been further explored. Their personalities and history felt somewhat underdeveloped, leaving me hungry for more depth in their portrayal.

Despite this minor quibble, Fireborne is a captivating read that beautifully blends action, emotion, and intrigue. Rosario Munda's storytelling prowess shines through, and I'm excited to see where she takes this series next. Fantasy enthusiasts, brace yourselves for a thrilling journey with Annie, Lee, and their majestic dragons.
