Il deserto dei Tartari by Dino Buzzati

A fairly good book overall. Buzzati's strength lies in his ability to create moments of small hopes, little blips of meaning that are only noticed because of how boring life at the fort is. Unfortunately, this book had little emotional impact on me, and at times, the writing was prosaic and overt. Only the ending was able to make feel powerfully how much Drogo squandered his life. A fine read, but not something I would really recommend.

I really wish the NYRB Classics series would release this--they have already republished Buzzati's Poem Strip--because that might bring it some of the attention it deserves. One of the great novels of the twentieth century. It is difficult to express too much about its themes--ambition, aging, irrelevance, self-deception, disappointment, courage, comfort, frustration--without telling too much on myself, so I will leave it at this: for so many people of my generation or general age cohort, who because of various structural conditions and personal setbacks have had to trim their sails on the dreams of their youth, there will be few novels that hit home the way this one does.

a short read that is deeply philosophical. the writing was hella good that i didnt even wish it to be longer bc it already maximizes the length of its pages.
