no real spoilers but ymmv:

spooky and grim, a fun romp. starts out more eerie and gothic (think haunting of hill house or yellow wallpaper) but ends action-packed and intense (think until dawn)

lots of questions were left unanswered which is a bit unsatisfying but also it makes sense for there to be no answer so I'm not going to lose sleep over it.

dorran is a fairly chill guy, a bit awkward, a bit ominous at first, but overall more of a woobie than anything. clare has final girl energy but her execution doesn't always hit the mark. they were a fun pair to read about and their relationship developed really realistically (though it wasn't very exciting)

it was a good book so I'm probably going to read the next one in the series at some point, but I'm not necessarily hooked enough to start reading it right now

The flaws of the main characters are in a way very emphasized in this book because they are in situations that cause them to be vulnerable and in situations that they don’t really know how to handle or respond to. This should definitely be a movie

I love post apocalypse/apocalypse stories and this was no exception, the pacing while a little slow in the beginning was right for the story. The story really starts gets exciting when Claire gets her memories back and the plot comes into focus and questions you've had throughout the book are answered. I will admit one of the big twists of the story confused the hell out of me, and I wasn't sure if I would like the direction the story was going to go in. And, while it was an odd way to go it didn't take away from my enjoyment.

The romance is a slowburn and I really liked that for them since Claire is suffering from amnesia and Dorran was her caretaker while also being a literal stranger to her.

The book ends on a cliff hanger and I'm excited to read the second book asap.

I am so mad about the ending of this book!
Do yourself a favor, and stop reading about a page before the start of chapter 33, and just imagine your own solution to the story.
Until then it was probably a 3.5, might have even been a 4 star read for me, depending on the ending. There were only a few writing choices that were bugging me, but all in all the book did well at holding my attention and building an adequate amount of tension.
I love the premise of combining the hinting at an apocalypse and the gothic, possibly haunted house story, marrying two of my favorite things in horror!
The additional story threads of the hostile weather and a "complicated" family history are also themes that I enjoy immensely.
And overall, I found it was quite well done, keeping you guessing what was really going on without being too annoying at that.
Until the end!
The author chose to connect the story threads in the most ridiculous way imaginable! Every possible tension and horror exited the stage left to make way for pure laughableness (is that a word?).
And then to think that she can create an engaging cliff-hanger
by threatening the return of the stupidest boss-monster villain created this side of the eighties, or maybe even ever

Have I mentioned that I am mad?
