Not what I was really expecting from the first Sherlock book. I just kinda thought the first story would be a little more lighthearted; a hunt for a mysterious and cruel killer but it ended up being very sad. I really felt for the characters, to keep it spoiler free.

I liked the story.  And it was very well written.  The characters were written with great care.  They had a slight but visible development, and it fit.  It was nice and at the same time interesting to see the beginning of the collaboration between Holmes and Dr.  Watson.
