Interesting concept and murder mystery. A lot of side characters were introduced early in the book and I had a hard time keeping them all straight and remembering who was married to who. I didn't quite understand the magic system, which isn't that big a deal, but it made the magic battles feel sort of low stakes since I wasn't sure what was significant and what wasn't. I enjoyed Hetty and Benjy and I'm looking forward to reading the next book.

This book is bridging on a 5 star and I am surprised at the range of ratings here. The characters are certainly the most solid part of the book so I think if you go into it wanting plot heavy, you'll be disappointed. Overall this just reads really well and is just enjoyable to listen to. I was excited to come back to it which is always a good sign. You also can't go past the audiobook, we all love Bahni Turpin, so it's a joy to listen to. Recommend if character focused historical mystery is your thing
