This is a phenomenal book and Will Trent is one of my favorite characters. This book has a lot of dark things to include sexual assault, murder, physical abuse, abuse (sexual and physical) to minors, and at times offensive language. However, I think Karin Slaughter talks about these things as horrible and disgusting from the perspective of law enforcement. This is to say she does this with respect and care needed for the subject at hand.

Will Trent becomes a much more thought out and intriguing character in this second book. He is someone you root for and care about. As a reader you not only want Will Trent to solve his case, but you also want him to have some wins in life- which becomes clear is easier said than done. I can’t wait to keep rooting for this character….and his ancient dog Betty haha.

Started reading hardcover from the library, finished on Kindle while traveling (it's very chunky to carry around)

No very big surprises imo. I hadn’t thought of Warren as an accomplice, but wasn’t very surprised either, it just didn’t do much for me. Though I understand Evan having power over Warren, I don’t get the setup of this crime. It also doesn’t fit Evan’s MO. He’s a molester, not a kidnapper. How and why Kayla was involved didn’t become clear either.
Someone (Victor) or a scene made intentionally creepy to set us on the wrong foot is completely fine with me, I actually like that, WHEN followed by a twist/surprise. Which wasn’t the case in this book. I’m always looking for the character mentioned in the beginning and then never again so we’d forget about them, who ends up being the culprit.
So yeah, I found the book a page turner but the end didn’t satisfy me.. Because it was a real page turner, I’m still giving it 3.5 stars but definitely not as enjoyable as Triptych, though as I said in that review, I didn’t find that ending very surprising either, all the surprises were in the first half of the book…
