This is exactly what it promises to b - It is a western with the timeline and the style and some of the weapons - it is a weird western in the feel and the characterizations and some of the anachronisms - while it is a good read and it kept me going, this has no real surprises and nothing unexpected happens - I can see this being turned into a Syfy movie of the week or similar as well - nothing great but enough to keep the reader going and plenty of action and adventure - though the timeline is accurate enough for fiction, the author relies heavily on his changes in history to make things go his way in the novel - it works though and I enjoyed it - 4 out of 5.

First 65% 4.5 stars ⭐️. Wild West with vampires, steampunk weapons, interesting characters, engaging writing. Sign. Me. Up!!! Much like Jim Butcher’s short story linking Luccio and Wyatt Earp. (I would read a full series of that spin-off!)
Then... I have no idea but it’s as if it was handed off to a completely different author.
Spoiler A unnecessary and off-putting hook-up somehow soured every bit of personality, pace, and plot.
2 stars for the latter portion and negative 1 ⭐️ for the final scene.

I like it, I'm annoyed, as always with the cliffhanger - get to writing and publishing!

One point - they took the horses in and gave them water and STRAW? Umm, no. Straw is bedding - has no food value for a horse. They gave them HAY. Hay IS different from straw. Just something to know for the future, Mr. Spradlin!

An okay read but nothing outstanding. It uses all the normal vampire tropes and clichés but doesn't do anything new with them. There was a slight romance element but it was flat and rushed and thus didn't work for me at all. Also, I highly doubt that names like Malachi and Shaniah were names used in old country Romania in the 1800s.
