4.5

If I had read this as a child, this would have been a five-star read for sure. Reading it as a adult, I really liked it, but I didn't love it. It just seemed like a really basic coming-of-age story, though I enjoyed the ambiguous-yet-hopeful ending. The bonus content at the end of the book provided a good run-down of the Salish Sea's ecology and current threats to its fragile balance for young readers.

If I rated this on my personal enjoyment, this book would be  3 stars. Since I'm not the target audience, and I know a younger me would have loved this, 4.5 stars overall.

This was… dark? Not great? Really not impressed with this. Don’t know how a book where orcas are the main characters could be so boring!  :( The art was really pretty though.
