An insight into the life of Bob Lord the autocratic chairman of Burnley although obviously well researched from the available material, the book is let down slightly, through no fault of the authors by the order of Bob Lord that his private papers be destroyed on his death.
We don't know the real story, for example behind the departure from Burnley of Jimmy McIlroy or the financial arrangements Lord came to Burnley Football Club once he retired from being a butcher.
One of the most startling revelations out of the book, that Lord was willing to sue Burnley Football Club whilst he was chairman and majority shareholder.
There is no doubt Lord was a visionary when it came to the running of a club and football, it was as is hinted in this account he just stayed too long, he couldn't let go of power.
Because of the lack of documentary evidence the authors rely on verbal accounts and the same things come up time and again, Lord could be generous and supportive but if you got on the wrong side of him you were a goner. Lord wanted yes men to toe the line.
As I read this book, I kept thinking to myself, yes I remember that particular event happening, this account of Lord's life put things into context leaving the reader to make up their own opinion of Bob Lord.
