So this was awesome. I really enjoyed this and it was a super quick read - the first few audiobooks are on Hoopla, so I'll definitely be continuing with the series!

DNF pretty early. The writing was atrocious and I’m really surprised no one else is talking about it. The sentences are super bland with no good description, and the dialogue is incredibly shallow. The word choice in the dialogue does not fit in with the high fantasy era, such as “I’m going pro” and “Umm, really coach?” The whole thing is just really underdeveloped and gives Wattpad vibes.

I’m really let down by this book. Won’t be continuing it.

I really enjoyed this. It was good fun. It was very predictable and the characters are very basic but I had fun reading this book. I'd recommend if you want a light fantasy read. The characters are all likeable even though they are pretty stereotypical. And the dueling aspect of this book puts a fun little twist on things.

Content warnings: This has instances of mild cursing 20+ times. Mostly, the d and h word. This story features a dual POV and most if not all of the cursing happens in the male’s point of view. There is also at least one instance of crude comments regarding’s a woman’s figure coming from the main male character, Prince Siv. Although, I grew to like Siv more. This tainted my views on him and enjoyment of him as a character. Also, I do wish there weren’t any cursing in this book.

I’m a mood reader and couldn’t get into this book for a while, but once I did, I really enjoyed it. I don’t read a lot of books that are straight fantasy. Most of the ones I read involve fairy tale retellings or lean more of a paranormal bent. Any beginning fantasy reader that can handle mild cursing might would like this. I do think romance will play a bigger part of the story has the series progresses. Romance is not a focus. Feelings are there and mentioned at times but is not a constant.
I do plan to continue the series and try Jordan’s other stories. I thought this book was well written.

My feelings on this book are... middling, I suppose. Due to my own inattention, I was expecting something very different, but I enjoyed what I got.

This book is an introduction to a series and you can tell. The world and the characters are being established. Keeping with the scope of what this first book was supposed to accomplish, I think it could have had an added 150 pages or so. Things could have been more fleshed out. However, for expecting a one off, quick "clean" kindle unlimited fantasy, I was pleasantly surprised by the plot and characters. Sure, a large part of this book is relationship development, but that's not ALL it is. It has actual events that are important apart from the romance. Unexpected yet fun read!

Plot: 4/5 (average)
Characters: 4/5 (kind of caricatures, but good ones)
Setting: 5/5 (actually well developed?)
Theme: 3/5 (TBD)
Prose: 4/5 (average)
Adult content: 4/5 (mild language)
Extra: 4/5 (enjoyment)

I did not expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. Especially at the beginning, I thought the characters were annoying. But that GROWTH. By the end, I loved the characters. I had a hunch about who the rebels were, but I wasn’t sure until they were revealed. I loved the magic system and world-building, and I can’t wait to see how the story will be developed in the next book and the rest of the series.

The best book I’ve read in a long time!!

This book…. I don’t even have the words to properly praise it. I was enraptured from the very beginning and through to the end. If you love the feeling you get reading books written by Tamora Pierce or while watching A Knights Tale pick this book up, you won’t be disappointed!
