This was a very atmospheric read! Very effortlessly gave the feeling of a dark fantasy-late 1800s city. Loved the carriages and the gas lamps and the cold. I really liked the mystery and the unsettling horror aspects with the ghouls and catacombs and dark magic.
It loses some points for only having 1.75 relevant female characters and also for being about 200 pages too long.

This book begins as a heist novel and then turns into a mystery as our gang of thieves rush to try to stop the murderous intents of a necromancer. It's dense, and I usually don't love mysteries, but I really enjoyed the characters, I liked seeing how this world develops, and I enjoyed that this world's best thief has to team up with what is essentially a fantasy Holmes and Watson duo. I think it's easy to see this is an early Wells' work as the pacing of the book is a bit uneven, but I still had a good time all the way through.

The book is set 100 or so years after the first book, and you do not need to read book 1 to understand anything in book 2 (there are some fun Easter eggs from book 1 here, but they wouldn't have impacted my enjoyment of the book if I hadn't just finished book 1).
