This is the second novel in Saberhagen’s Empire of the East trilogy (precursor to his Books of Swords). In this one, the focus switches from the somewhat dull protagonist of the first book to his enemy, who proves to be much more interesting character. The battle during the second half of the novel is excellent, with powerful demons ranged against each other. A big improvement over the preceding volume.
