2/12: My first French novel! Very excited!

Quel livre!

As stated above, this book has the honor of being the first novel I've ever read in French. Although towards the end it was essentially One Bad Thing Happens After Another, I found it very sweet and funny at various points, with a jolting but overall happy ending.

I definitely had to have Google Translate open as I read, just for a few words a page, but I think it's a great novel pour apprendre le français as well as for entertainment value on its own.

"...Sufism was not a disease, which has already reassured me a bit, it was a way of thinking - though there are ways of thinking that are also diseases, Mr. Ibrahim often said."

Somehow I only read french books I really come to like.
This was really moving in some way, even though it's only 75 pages long. The language is so poetic at times, especially when Monsieur Ibrahim is speaking. His words are full of wisdom, and gentleness and kindess and compassion and ... definitely my favourite character.
Momo was kind of hard to see trough at first. But that also made him interesting in my opinion. And of course there are some characters who are behaving absolutely wrong.
The plot was somehow also a bit surreal and I'm not sure if things could (have) happen(ed) like that in reality, but that's not the point. The point of this whole story is to learn something for life. I defenitely did.
Spoiler my favourite scene was when Monsieur Ibrahim talked about thrash bins and what they say about the people living in the area. That was just (sadly) so on point.

This little book is so small, but contains so many themes and aspects, one should read it several times. It reminded me a bit of the Little Prince. So yeah, this was sweet and felt like a warm embrace or a pad on the shoulder when you're exhausted from all the life things happening.
