I really dislike fairy books - there is such malice and menace to them all (Wicked Lovely, Fairie Path, Paranormalcy) but this was interesting and I can see why the kids are hooked. The writing is so-so and has some mature language.

Wow wow wow!
Its 1:08am and I want to read Book 2 but damn I need sleep.

There is YA, mystery, action, romance, everything you want in paranomal YA fiction. Not only that but its NOT about vampires! Woohoo!!!
Loved it!

Spoiler I read this book once before when I was a teen and I distinctly remember loving the book. It was before the second one had released which is why I then never continued this series as I had gotten it from the library.

So when I came across this book again, I felt it was time to go down memory lane and reread the first and finally read the whole series.

And well I can see why teen me loved the book. Adult me however is not as overjoyed by it lol.

I liked the world building well enough, but the whole time I always felt that a little something was missing. Maybe it’s the writing that causes this for me or the sometimes very silly decisions Meghan makes even if you consider that she is just a teen.

Overall though I enjoyed my time with the book and look forward to continuing this series after so many years.

Quotes I liked:

“Something was happening, something strange and creepy and terrifying, and the scariest part of all was that it wore a familiar, ordinary face.”

“Charming,” Puck commented, gazing around in distaste. “I love the barren, dead feel they’re going for. Who’s the gardener, I wonder? I’d love to get some tips.”

“I am a cat,” Grimalkin replied, as if that explained anything.”

OMG!! This book was AMAZING!! I really liked it. Meghan Chase is a great character. This book was nothing that I expected it to be like. I loved Grim. Haha. He was so funny. Definitely my favorite character and not just because he's a cat. Ash was incredible also. I felt so bad for hime when he told the story of Ariella. Oh the tragedy!! Puck was hilarious. He made the whole book. I guess we'll figure out if he died in the next book. Oberon was a cool character. I definitely need to read A Midsummer Night's Dream though.

Overall I liked the story. The overarching concept of new iron fey vs older fey is engaging. Many of the creatures and plot developments are reminiscent of other fey stories. I would wager that Labyrinth is probably a favorite of the author and that they she really likes the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland.

I'm not sure how I feel about Puck as a teenage love interest, but I liked his character. I thought the author did a good job of crafting his mischievous devil may care attitude. Ash is the typical reserved warrior with a wounded heart that only the heroine can reach. It's a short lived love triangle as the reader can tell fairly early in the story that Meghan will choose Ash over Puck, which is a shame. Puck is a more interesting character while Ash is kind of a walking cliche. Meghan is kind of a damsel which is tiring at times. She does start to come into her own towards the end of the story though, so maybe she'll be less of a damsel in future books.

It's an entertaining, fast paced read and puts a unique twist on fey stories. I plan on reading the second book in the series.

This was a really easy ya fantasy read. I read this book knowing that it was kind of a nostalgic series as I think it’s great for the time it was published. My only issues were that I personally thought this book was a little too rushed and it could have used more pages. Additionally, the romance at the end of the book grated on my nerves. I fully expected romance going into this book but it was not well done at all. My favorite character was the cat. I don’t know if I will continue reading the series due to the predictability of the plot and the immaturity of the main character.

I would have enjoyed this so much more 10 years ago.
Unfortunately, I don't think this has aged well, however it was really interesting to see the influence from other books and exploring the world of the Seelie and UnSeelie courts.
