Hannibal Rising by Thomas Harris

I rate it approved by the ESDS (extreme social distance society). I was very skeptical of this one, the “lecterverse” containing my most cherished literary characters, but their movie was a pile of steaming fly bait and their role in the show precipitated the longest suspension of disbelief... still Thomas Harris doubled down on this prequel and proved himself a true master of his craft. The amount of research gone into things like Japanese high society, postwar Europe, historic machinery and customs of conflicting classes, influence of the Soviet Sphere, and burning embers of the Russian Revolution all deserve to command a reader’s respect. Only a few items leave any trace amounts of skepticism, but they’re hardly worth mentioning as the overall mission seems to be accomplished: the first two in the series read as a similar beast, while the third was altogether a different monster newly released - here we have the origins from which that monster mutated. #readingrainbow #hannibal #colorado

On the positive side, this book contains plenty of the beautiful prose I love in Thomas Harris' novels.

On the negative side, it's a slow crawl to find the plot, and it's not very satisfying when it finally shows up.

On the extra subjective side, I found it very slow going in general. It felt like Hannibal was 13 forever and then he was 18 forever. I get that these were the parts of his life that were most significant but I still found it very slow.

Unfortunately very meh, and paint-by-numbers. I suspect the origin of Hannibal Lecter's sociopathy (if there needs to be one) is best left unexplained.

Starting out as an incredibly bright and caring child in Lithuania during World War II, Hannibal Lecter got acquainted with his murderous and cannibalistic side at the young age of thirteen. The text uses many seldom-used words and terms of subjects I know nothing about (medicine, boats, Japanese culture), which adds many new words to my vocabulary, but also makes the text harder to piece together. It's difficult to keep track of some of the characters for they appear without introduction until later chapters. My favourite group of characters were the Hiwi's; Grutas, Milko, Grentz, Dortlich, Kolnas and Porvik. They were horrible, horrible people, but the book was most interesting and wonderfully unsettling when they were involved. The film was a great interpretation of the book and helped me clear up misconceptions I had when reading.
