A wonderful account of a gay woman's journey out of an evangelical marriage and church, and into her own queerness. Well written, and compelling!

I've read a few books on the topic of ex-vangelicals/deconstruction, and the writing quality is typically a bit iffy. Not in Heretic. It shows that Kadlec studied literature because she is just so good at really describing her experiences, you feel them too. You feel her pain. You feel her new freedom. Definitely a must-read if you are into exposing fundie stuff.

The stories weren’t interesting and I know why all the facts were added, but it felt like reading a research paper and that was not what I was in the mood for.

Thanks to Harper Books for the free advance copy of this book.

  • HERETIC is part memoir, part examination of how evangelical culture and beliefs have impacted every part of American life.

  • I didn't grow up in a specifically evangelical church, but having been a teenager in church/America in the 1990s-2000s, all this stuff was simply in the air, and reading this book felt both enlightening and cathartic.

  • I also appreciated that this book touched on how hard it can be to find community outside churches in this country, and Kadlec's search for both welcoming congregations and secular fellowship.
