As a long time veg, I don’t read books about animal farming. But this one kept getting suggested as great books.
I admit it’s very well done, but holy heck don’t read it if you are already sensitive to factory farming practices. I couldn’t handle some and fast forwarded, but I feel okay with that since I don’t participate in it.
I must say, it’s much harder to be around my near eating family no, but I really wish they’d read this. At the same time, the title is such that most meat eaters probably won’t read it.

One of my favorite lines in the book is “If nothing matters, there's nothing to save.”

The book was an interesting look into animal welfare in farming. I am glad for the descriptions of the practices, but some of the inclusions (such as information from PETA, which has been known to falsify claims) detract from the overall message. Some passages struck me as particularly dated as well, with language around human suffering throw in for shock value, especially mentions of sexual abuse and slavery. I wouldn't recommend this book to a friend, for those reasons, but I did gain a lot from it. I don't think I can take the word of the author as fact, but I do think his argument was persuasive.

really fascinating information that should be widely known. definitely pushed me to reconsider the choices i've made in my life. at the same time, there were parts that came from such a painfully white perspective...
