Meant to be, or meant to break?

Honey and Luca have been together forever. As high school graduation looms over them, Honey begins to have doubts about their relationship. For years they have prepared to go to a local college and take over the family business together, but Honey has bigger dreams in mind. When she is accepted into her dream school, she and Luca get into a huge fight. Honey finds a scientific article that suggests people find their soulmates after five relationships. She challenges Luca to an experiment in which they will each go on five dates with other people. If they still feel they are soulmates after the five dates, she will stay with Luca. When she is stuck at a science convention with her worst enemy, she finds that love can sometimes come in surprising packages. Is Luca her soulmate after all? Or will someone else win her heart?
I was pleasantly surprised by this YA romance novel. I loved the characters and the relationship dynamics throughout the story. I was amazed at Honey's growth as she went out of her comfort zone to help her determine which path to take. This novel was emotional and made me slightly nostalgic for my high school days! I recommend If We Break Up to anyone who loves YA romance novels.

There was a specific moment in this book that I think it summarizes this reading experience for me. The main character was talking about how when you get used to something, it doesn't have that spark anymore. For instance, you can love pizza, but once you regularly eat it, a pizza is just a pizza. No matter how much you enjoy it. That's how I felt about this book - it doesn't matter how much I love to read YA or romance books if I keep reading the same formula over and over.

I think the book had a nice concept and it was well thought, but I just couldn't help thinking I wasn't reading anything new, anything that brought something different to the table. I didn't enjoy the characters and I was bored for the majority of the story. Maybe if I had read the book in my teenage years, I would've had a different opinion.

I received an e-Arc in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Quinnova Press and Netgalley!

star rating- 4 stars
overall- i heavily enjoyed this book more than i though, and my best way to describe it was a romance but not a romance, and it seemed more contemporary, but it was different and i loved it.

characters- luca annoyed me at the start which was honestly the point, but i don't understand why any person would act that way he did about honey's dream. honey on the other hand, i loved her and her indecisiveness energy, cause that's what i got. oh and mason, mason was awesome, like with all his fact dumping and his bickering with honey, he was awesome. oh and maggie the makeup star, i loved her too.

plot- i think the spacing worked out quite well for the book it didn't go so fast that i was confused about the character growth, but it wasn't as slow that i got bored.

what i liked- i loved the 5 date plan and how that all worked, i also loved the STEM club group, they made me very happy and excited. oh and i liked the text messages between Mason and Honey

what i disliked- I disliked Luca at the beginning, as well as when he lied to her, but
that was about it

overall it was a great read, and im glad i picked it up

I’m actually surprised at how much I enjoyed this. I was expecting some sappy YA love story about high school sweethearts but that’s NOT what this is. This is a story about love, yes, but even more, it’s a story about independence, freedom, paving your own way and being true to yourself.

Honey and Luca give off some serious Dean and Rory vibes in the beginning, and Luca acted like an absolute douche at times. It irritates me, but I’m glad he was able to turn things around. If I was Honey I’m definitely not sure I would have been as forgiving or as nice to him.

While this WAS a quick and easy read, it was definitely not boring. There were twists and turns and questions left unanswered until the very end. I was completely invested as this story took me on a journey, and I was more than happy to let it.

Thanks to NetGalley and Xpresso Book Tours for providing this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Overview of my thoughts- I feel like the pacing and idea of this book was a little off. It felt to cliche to believe (there is no way in real life things as perfect as what happened to Honey would ensue). It was an entertaining read, no matter how cheesy it may have been.

Plot- The book follows our lovely Honey Blackwell, who is dating the perfect guy for her, or so her friends say. They have it all, a set future working in real estate, loving parents who, just like them, are high school sweet hearts. But are Honey and Luca really happy? Their relationship is strained when Honey is accepted into the college of her dreams. Bad news is...they live in Texas, and FAU is in Colorado. While Luca is set on the idea of them being soulmates, Honey isn't so sure, and so she proposes this: They break up, go on five dates each, and see if maybe they really are meant to be together. So they do it...and find out that maybe their future together isn't so set in stone.

Characters- I am so in love with Maggie!! She was my absolute favorite character this book--the perfect side character and best friend. I also adored Mason! Love the representation of the Filipino culture (fellow Filipino right here!).

Romance- You could tell from the start that Honey and Luca's relationship wasn't going to work. So I was all for it when Mason got introduced because your girl is a sucker for a good academic rivals to lovers! I loved how we got to see Honey and his relationship grow through out the book (I melted when he put his name in as, "Mason (as in the jar)," because it was so sweet!

Age Rating- Solid YA book so 13-14+

Overall- Read the book! It's currently free on Kindle :)
