Dreadfully written, as per usual Heather Morris books.
It more or less consisted entirely of conversations, imagined. Story is of women who escaped Singapore in the 1940s as the Japanese invaded. It covers their period of internment in the camps in Sumatra.
True story.

I wanted to like this book due to the subject matter, but the writing just ruined it for me.
The dialogue was very unrealistic, the characters one dimensional, and there was no real sense of them even being in a POW camp.

Learning about this true story was great, but the book seemed like it was written for children and/or for a PG rating. Horrible things happened, but I didn’t feel like they were horrible because the characters didn’t seem real. The writing was choppy, and jumped from one conversation to the next without any context, which is very different than her previous novels (which I loved). Just an all around miss for me.
