Cool premise, not a fan of the execution. It was hard to figure out the message of the book beyond "teenagers do unhinged things sometimes for reasons that adults can't possibly understand." I definitely read books with similar themes (Catcher in the Rye, etc.) when I was a teenager, but at least with other books I could kind of relate to the characters. With Real World, I couldn't understand any of the motivations behind the characters' behavior, even after they explained it.

far more riveting in its conclusion then grotesque, my most recent Kirino read. I really enjoyed the look at life from the chaos of a teenager who feels on the fringes of everything, including their friends, and the exploration into cause-and-effect. It was a devourable read, even if I felt no particular affinity for any one character. I do wish yuzan had been more wholly fleshed out as a character. Misgendering, transphobia, and lesbophobia are in this book, so do note this.

This book was labeled as feminist noir with queer characters, and it was in the teen section at the library, so I had a certain expectation of what this book would be like. It was not like my expectations, and I really don't think it belongs in the teen section. I did not like any of the characters, and didn't really understand them either. I didn't see what was feminist about it either, except possibly in a "support women's rights but mostly women's wrongs" way. I also expected a murder mystery and just got stuck with murder. There was one part I did like - each of the characters had point of view chapters, and it was interesting finding out what they knew about each other, what they thought the others knew about them, and what the others really did know about them.

the book ending is what pushed it from a solid 3 stars to 3.75. the final pieces of introspection really helped give all the characters real shape when before they all felt like they fit into stereotypical molds (ie violent-loner, the good girl, the academic, the token gay, the succubus, etc.)

I enjoyed the book but it was also kinda boring. I didn't really care for the characters that much but I did like the plot.
