I feel not an ounce of sympathy for Wariner's mother, Kathy. I recognize she was put into a horrible situation at a young age, and did what she could with what she had, but my sympathies ended when she chose to return to her abusive husband, and to stay beside him throughout the vile abuse he inflicted on Wariner. To crave attention so much that you put your own happiness above the safety of your children is unforgiveable. Had she left sooner, no doubt would the tragedy that befalls the family near the book's end have been prevented.
My heart aches for Wariner, as well as her siblings who did not live to see the family's hard-earned freedom. It's a shame that events had to transpire the way they did.
