A tragic and compelling story about a young girl growing up in an (eventual) family of 10 children and a mother who is the second wife to a polygamous man. The story is full of heartbreak as she is forced to grow up too fast, care for her younger siblings, and help her mother. There are times when they are left alone and she, as a child, is responsible for cooking and cleaning for her siblings, with her brothers' help. They live in a pologyamous colony in Northern Mexico, but also spend time in Southern California as well as Texas and Arizona. The kind of memoir you can't stop reading.

God this was a painful read.  I love a memoir, and got this recommendation after saying how much I enjoyed Educated by Tara Westover.  Similar vibes for sure but I was quite shocked by just how disturbing this was.  I usually am not too bothered by dark topics but wow, I had to set this down and take some breaks.  I am glad I picked it up, but will probably not be recommending to others without a heavy warning of it's inclusion of graphic sexual child abuse.  Very interesting, heartbreaking, and impactful.
