This book seemed to be composed of a bunch of subplots that you would want to skim through the get to the actual plot of a better book. Extremely forgettable. But I gave the second star based on Lepucki's very enjoyable and relaxed writing style and voice, it made the book at least tolerable to get through.

A darkly funny book about messy women having messy relationships, mother-daughter relationships being the messiest of all. I loved Lady and S and their drunken friendship. They may be a little bit irresponsible (what happens to the bunny isn't great) but they are doing their best, and for whatever reason I found their narcissism kind of endearing (and I would have loved more Kit in the mix). Lots of unexpected chuckling and snorting from my side.

Disclaimer: I have a distinct memory of the author dancing at my wedding.

I read the entire book over a Mother's day weekend away from my daughter, which might have made me a little guilty for not bringing her along. Lepucki has a way of writing such real and flawed characters that I often wonder if they're based on real people she knows. As someone who grew up in LA, moved to the Bay Area, then moved back down to LA, the setting and characters spoke to me in a way that made me both feel at home and cringe. She also walks a fine balance between explaining the art world as well as poking fun at it.

It wasn’t nearly as shocking or intriguing. The dialogues felt genuine, and I do love a flawed protagonist, but it didn’t bring it all the way home for me. Recommend but not all that enthusiastically.
