I bought this after reading an article by Rhodes in the Guardian and being struck by his passion for what he does (at the time I had zero interest in classical music - I would now say I'm open to it as a concept). I didn't really know what the book was going to be about and then when I discovered it was about the horrific childhood abuse he suffered, I put it to one side, waiting for the right headspace.
This is a book which comes with a lot of trigger warnings. It's also a book with a lot of posh boy privilege which often goes unrecognised by an author who is brutally honest about a lot of other stuff. It might have been rather lovely that 5 universities offered him a place after he got expelled from Edinburgh and then sectioned, but I suspect having A levels from Harrow helped.
I enjoyed the start of every chapter when Rhodes spoke about a piece of music and what it meant to him - I understand that this follows a similar line to his concerts, so it was nice to see that carried through onto paper.
Overall, this was an inspiring read - not of someone overcoming abuse exactly, because lets be frank, it (understandably) fucked him right up. Instead I felt inspired by someone so incredibly passionate about their career, which is what drew me to read it in the first place.

James Rhodes is a brilliant musician, a passionate artist, a relatable author, and really fucking funny. In spite of the dark subject matter of this book, Mr. Rhodes (James? Jimmy? I feel like I know him pretty well after reading this. How casually do I address him?) has a dark, twisted sense of humor that made me laugh harder than any book has in ages. On top of that, this book is poignant, heartbreaking, infuriating, devastating, uplifting, and able to fill you with pure joy. In short, this book reads like one of the pieces of music Mr. Rhodes is so passionate about. If you haven't read this book yet, I recommend listening to the pieces of music that relates to each chapter. Mr. Rhodes has created a playlist on Study to accompany this book and I highly recommend listening while reading. Also, if you get a chance, he created 3 playlists on his Spotify account where he introduces brilliant pieces of music before a track plays. I can't recommend the things Mr. Rhodes has done for music enough. Go buy his albums.
Moderate: Child abuse

Wonderful. Candid--the truth. Wonderful. I love his opinions and his point of view. A tough but 100% worth-it read.

The best autobiography I've read. The book also includes an amazing selection of classical music to listen to, recommended by James Rhodes himself. Starts and ends with the aria from Bachs Goldberg variations.
