Another good Kinsey Milhone story. I actually didn't figure out the twist in this one early (maybe because of a huge gap in time at the end due to vacation). Still enjoy the series!

for my continued listening pleasure...in which kinsey is hired to deliver a check to a young boy, but her client mysteriously dies before she can do the job. i'm getting so old and i've read so many books that i can't remember whodunnit, so listening again is fun.

This ended up on a very depressing note. Not face-off in the traditional sense, but kinda gut-wrenching.

I could not have guessed the murderer, but I enjoyed the book.

D is for Deadbeat is the 4th book/case in the Kinsey Millhone (Alphabet Series) by Sue Grafton.

Sometimes – Kinsey just doesn’t know when to walk away..

In this case; our PI located in California, Kinsey, is tasked to deliver a $25,000 check on behalf of her client, John Daggett aka Alvin Limardo. The FMC tracked down the recipient only to find out he is a teenager. However, a job is a job. Once Kinsey makes the delivery, she turns around to cash the check for her services from John and it bounces - then shortly after he winds up dead. Does Kinsey stop there and cut her losses? After all, all she had to do was make a delivery.

The answer is no, Kinsey never stops at an opportunity to solve a mystery!

Kinsey is then hired by John’s daughter, Barbara Daggett, to find the murderer. Suspects are plentiful, and all the families interviewed have their own sad story - but the way this one ends… Kinsey (& I) will be thinking about this for a while.

“Some debts of the human soul are so enormous, only life itself is sufficient forfeit.”

I think I'm changing my middle initial to B for blindsided. For the second time this year, a novel took me off guard. D is for Deadbeat did just that and I'd even venture to say this book in the ABC series has been the best so far.
It starts off with an ex-con wanting a cashier's check for $25,000 delivered to a 15 year old boy. Before Kinsey can deliver the check, the deadbeat is murdered and the suspects are numerous. Could the deadbeat's sins of the past have played into it or maybe some under the table drug deals in prison has some revenge minded criminals seeking their cash back? Hmm. Definitely worth the time to read this one and find out.
