This author was recommended by a friend and shortly after I came across this book on a free shelf (funny how things like that happen). Well I of course picked it up and made it a priority to read. This was good. The story started well and kept my interest throughout. It was an "easy" read meaning I didn't have to put a lot of thought or concentration into staying with the story or understanding what was going on. I enjoy these types of authors for when I travel for these very reasons so I think I will be adding them to my short list of books I would bring on vacation.

"Forensic expert "Cat" Ferry has a stellar reputation until a panic attack paralyzes her at a New Orleans murder scene. Praying the attack is a one-time event, she continues working, but when the same killer strikes again -- raising fears that a serial killer is at large -- Cat blacks out over the victim's mutilated corpse. Suspended from the FBI task force, Cat returns to her hometown of Natchez, Mississippi, to regroup. Though her colleagues know her as a world-class forensic odontologist, Cat lives a secret life. Plagued by nightmares, and deeply involved with a married homicide detective, Cat holds herself together with iron nerves and alcohol, using her work as a substitute for life. But her family's secluded antebellum estate provides no sanctuary. When some of Cat's forensic chemicals are spilled in her childhood bedroom, two bloody footprints are revealed. This discovery sets in motion a quest to piece together Cat's past -- buried memories that could tie her father's murder to the grisly deaths occurring in New Orleans in the present. For only by finding this remorseless killer can Cat save her sanity -- and her life." (From Amazon)

A gothic southern novel with dark themes but I still enjoyed the story.

This is another great book of Iles. He's very good at weaving complex suspense with interesting characters. I like that we get to see a couple of the characters from his previous books. Overall, a great suspense book with detailed forensics (which I love) and a strong female character.

My first novel from Greg Iles and it won't be my last. This was a slow burn 🔥 but kept me engaged to want to know what happened and how everything was connected. Not to say I think the book was slow-paced, but more that the pace was steady throughout. There were a lot of dark subjects in this book - child sexual assault, rape, PTSD, and suicide - so something to be aware of if those things are triggering.
I had mixed feelings about Cat throughout the book too. We find out early on that she's pregnant (by a guy who's married, no less) and there are parts where she is so adamant about not drinking or taking anything to harm the fetus, but then 3 pages later she's downed half a bottle of vodka 😒 I wish Iles had picked a lane instead of the back and forth with that.

This was a much better book than the first Greg Iles book I read. This book is about how childhood sexual abuse, even when not consciously remembered, affects the way the survivors live their adult lives. The story is set in Natchez, MS. A good read.

"Cat" Ferry is fired from a task force investigating a series of murders in New Orleans despite being a world-class odontologist because of panic attacks and apparent blackouts. But when she leaves New Orleans and goes back home to Natchez, Mississippi, her problems seem to multiply. What is going on here? Good job, Greg Iles. I checked this audio book out of the library prior to a week-long trip thinking that it would be interesting even though it has 16 discs. Soon, however, I was hooked--hooked to the point that I was making up excuses to get back into the car and drive around "doing errands" so that I could get back into the story and find out what was going on.
