A bit slow going in the beginning, but once it got going and everything came full circle- I really fell in love with this book and every single one of the characters! Truly one of the best books I've read this year!

Loved this book. Life is all chemistry, but women cannot be chemist, scientist or individuals in their own right. Well, this is all about to change…

I found it uniquely fun and yet at times very jarring. You’re gonna feel like you’re getting hatecrimed by proxy multiple times.

I think what stands out the most is the remarkable characterization. Every character is very distinct from each other. And though some critics say Zott feels too 2020s and that it deals with “modern” themes, I think that’s an intellectual disservice. The fight for women to be taken seriously didn’t start in 2015 wtf cmon guys.

There’s an essence of the era very clearly in every interaction.
The main couple is very refreshing. It kinda made me go “holy autism batman!!!” several times but that’s the beauty of Garmus’ characterization skills.

My one gripe is how the antagonistic people were REALLY antagonistic. Like everyone who isn’t the main character is cartoonishly evil. The cast of “good” characters builds up slowly but holy god you’re fighting the current of shitty personalities every step of the way. It’s like the whole populace needed to burn in hell.

Otherwise great read. I was a STEM girlie for those 300 ish pages and I enjoyed it.

This book was a fun read-

Woman is kicked out of her postdoctoral program when she confronts her rapist- and finds herself working at a lab where she befriends the resident genius- they start a relationship and he treats her as an equal- except their dog- causes an accident and she finds herself alone and pregnant. She continues her experiments at home- and then starts a cooking show for a local channel where she teaches chemistry lessons while putting dinner on the table. Her life creates a community for her and may not often understand humans, but she adapts and raises her daughter- with the help of a neighbor, a dog and the producer....

Read if you enjoy stories that slowly fit together.

Much funnier than I thought it was going to be. I loved all the characters (and that even the dog got a POV).

A great book that looks at women’s role in science and pays homage to the women who fought hard so someone like we could get my PhD in science with relative ease.
