Troublesome history but necessary to read.

A very upsetting and triggering history, but also one that I am glad I learned. There are many truths we haven't been openly taught about the antebellum era, which helps to understand how deeply embedded and still prevalent biological racism is. I understand the author may have done this to protect herself, so I do not blame her, but it would have helped made this book more accessible if it didn't have as stoic of a viewpoint. This is a truly upsetting history and I would've liked to see more passion from the author.
