While I was surprised that Ms. Roberts wrote a Western historical, I was happy to find it has all her trademark romance and suspense. Sarah Conway has been educated back East but comes to Arizona to find her father. She's a lady by any definition of the word, yet she's determined to follow her father's dream. Jake Redman is part Apache. He's sure Sarah won't stick it out with the dirt and hard work in the small claim her father owned. Despite himself, he ends up helping the spunky woman, but there is more to why Sarah's father died.

I love me a Nora Roberts romance. Such a freakin’ cute & completely unrealistic love story. It had cheesy moments, flowery moments and typical OTT moments. It also had heart & soul as all of Nora Roberts characters do.

One of only three historical romances written by Nora, Lawless tells the story of Sarah Conway, who is traveling to the frontier town of Lone Bluff in Arizona Territory to reunite with her father when her carriage is attacked by Indians. Jake Redman, reluctant gunslinger, saves the day and escorts the carriage to town. Once Sarah arrives she learns that her father recently passed away but she is still determined to stay and see the life her father was building for her. Jake takes her to her father's claim and Sarah realizes that all of Matt Conway's letters detailing his successes out west were fabrications. Jake thinks the proper and pampered Sarah won't last a single night on the rustic land but Sarah surprises him with her grit and determination. When it is uncovered that Matt was murdered, Jake and Sarah team up to uncover the mystery surrounding Matt's death. If you like a good western romance look no further! This book has Nora's wonderful description of place and two wonderful characters who sizzle on the page. DNF. Only read a small bit of the free preview, and even that was too much. Life is too short to bother with books who are so terrible.

It's a romance novel set in Injun country! Does it have:

1. A "half-breed" hero? CHECK! Per the jacket copy, Jake Redman is "half Apache and all man"!
.
2. A caucasian heroine? CHECK! She's even blonde and pale. (+2 bonus points)

3. A kidnapping and attempted rape of the caucasian heroine by a Native American villain? CHECK! His "dark eyes" actually "gleam" in the firelight as he begins to cut her clothes away! (+1 bonus point)

I believe that's romance novel Indian bingo right there.

Putting aside the painful racial caricaturing (and I know that the idea of easily "putting it aside" is an issue in its own right) this novel's plot is as flimsy as one of its heroine's chemises, but the writing isn't terribly godawful and some of the characterization is fun. (Nora, you're welcome to steal that blurb for the next edition).

For me I found this book hard to read, I just couldn't really get into it, its not normally the type of book I read either. In this case I felt the film was better, but its worth a read if you are interested in this type of history.
