This is a cute book that introduces children to farm life as well as the barn quilts. In fact, I can see this as a fun project to do with elementary age children – read the story with them & have them think about (and maybe design on paper with colored paper/crayons, etc.) what sort of quilt square would be on their own house … or the church’s … or their school’s, etc.

The illustrations are absolutely darling and beautifully done. They complement the text well and enhance the story, too, as should be the case in every good children’s book. I also enjoyed learning more about quilt patterns by default as Miz Patti and Dennis try to decide what pattern to use for Maple Shade Farm’s barn. It may be a bit over the heads of the youngest readers, but I think it should be accessible at a basic level to most.

Bottom Line: The Barn Quilt is a fun book for all ages. The sweet illustrations and cozy tale appeal to young hearts – and those young at heart – and the story itself provides lots of opportunity for interaction with your reader(s), both during the reading and later. A cute gift to give this holiday season!
