Marvellous. Perfect for this time of the year.

For those who enjoy these tales as much as I do, I'd recommend listening to A Podcast To The Curious. Each week, the presenters discuss one of M R James' (or, now that they've exhausted the master's canon, stories by his influencers or influenced) in detail. Comforting listening in the winter months.

I did not finish this book. It wasn't for me. So why did I give it 3 stars? It wasn't BAD. In fact, the stories were okay, but not to my taste. Someone else might really like them.

As with almost any anthology, some stories are better than others. I liked how the stories are arranged, almost thematically and coherently. Although the slightly more 'boring' stories got grouped together towards the end. Inevitably, the archaic use of English can be a little befuddling at times, though Oxford's appendix helped. A rather chilling read as a whole.

Truly, M.R. James is a treasure amongst late Victorian-Edwardian ghost story writers. Engaging, unique, and self-aware in a sometimes very witty manner. Highly recommend listening to the audio read by Derek Jacobi, too.

As a short story collection, it's something I pick up whenever I feel like reading a specific story instead of all in one go
