Reading this book is about capturing a mood. It tells of a simple story - a boy coming of age by moving to the big city. It teases a friendship between this boy and the famous Dr. Sigmund Freud. The friendship explored within these pages is shallow. I guess that's not surprising given the slimness of this volume. It would've been astounding if Seethaler were able to create depth from such a fantastical premise.

But the plot isn't why I enjoyed the book. Seethaler manages to capture this emotion that is the embodiment of "coming-of-age". All the confusion, but coupled with naive confidence in other places, the wonder of being exposed and understanding our place within the larger world and a shifting definition of home... they are all expressed through Franz.

Franz benimmt sich so als ob er noch nie Menschen kennengelernt hat.

Teilweise ganz interessant, aber Franz hat halt einfach ein Egozentrik- Problem.
