I was in the midst of a long, detailed review when the Goodreads app refreshed and I lost it all.

I’ve been in a reading slump for months.  A YouTube video by Literary Lily inspired me to read a book from my 2023 TBR and this was the title that called to me.  It is first “real” book in a while to suck me in until I finished it.  I didn’t reread the synopsis beforehand so this ended up being very different from what I was expecting.  But the synopsis is accurate when read after the fact.

Decent story but the ending did disappoint. I kinda knew where the story was going but overall it kept me interested.

I wanted to like this book, I was really excited for it. Especially when they started describing the magic, and it was clearly based on old witchcraft trials and 17th c ideas of magic. That was super cool! But as a read further it was based far more in Wicca, a modern religious movement that has little to do with historical practices. Elizabeth started to bore me as a character, and I was disturbed by the claim that this is a historical romance, given the only person she has a significant "romantic" relationship with is a horrible and abusive person.
Decided it wasn't worth another 6 hours of my life, and rather regretted the hours I'd already put in.

Boring, and much too much magic. And saying this is a bit of a romance is a stretch.
