Loved it, I normally review a lot of books and I don't get to sit down and truly enjoy a book I want to read very often. This one was well crafted and the chemistry between Claire and Black is off the charts. A couple of weeks ago I was gifted a book five or six in this series and it did really well. Well enough that I wanted to start over. At the volume of books I can read I can tell you that this doesn't happen very often and I was very happy with the first book enough to continue to the second. Kudos to this author for a well crafted book. Overall entertainment at the best. Five stars.

Another nook Free Friday. I don't know why I download them!
Well, there is certainly "no resemblance to any person, living or dead" here and I am sure that "all names, places and incidents are products of the author's [lurid] imagination".
It's a wacky police procedural set in the Ozarks interwoven with the gruesome life story of the killer.

Yikes!

Is there a genre called Romantic Horror? If so, Ladd would win with this creepy but well written book.

As a veteran InDeath series fan I have to say I think I enjoyed the millionaire Black as love interest reveal even more than the fairly quick hot 'n horny over a good cup of coffee connect between Roarke and Eve.
I was right there with Claire not trusting Black as far as she could throw him. He was written arrogantly enough that I wanted him to be a suspect. Mission accomplished for the writer.

The creepy bordering on pure horror of the investigation was almost too much for me, and that is saying a lot.

I like Morgan's style and angsty back story so I will hang in there and hope I can stomach the cases to come.

I started on the prologue and though man this is going to be a great book! Then it switched to Claire and...well at first I was really bored with it. The crime was interesting, but there was so much detail introducing people and stuff. I don't know I just didn't like it that much. It did get much better though and I loved how they had chapters of the killer throughout as well. The killer was so messed up and I really enjoyed that. About half way through I read the synopsis for the book and it made it sound like it was going to be a romance novel thriller, but it really isn't. There is not much of a romance element to it which was nice. Just a good suspense novel with a great messed up killer. I can't wait to read more from the author.

I'd give this one a 3.75 - willing to read more in the series. Didn't figure out the bad guy in this one, and loved the Lake of the Ozarks setting.

But the romance seemed a little over-the-top unlikely which damaged the book imho.

A very exciting book! I am now trying to get the remaining books in the Claire Morgan series. One would never guess the killer. I loved the way the author interweaves the story between Claire's life and that of the killer, and connecting all the dots in between.

3.5 stars. I like the story, but not the writing so much. Also, there were way too many female detective story tropes. That said, the suspense and twists were great.
