Nic Stone sure knows how to get important concepts into her books!

Even in a children's book I felt this powerful message. I related to the protagonist. I rooted for her, and I was not just relieved but also extremely pleased with the ending/outcome.

Quickest, sweetest read. Really a fun and lovely story, with unexpectedly poignant moments.

So glad this exists for the babies.

Shenice is team captain and her team is ready to go to the Fast Pitch Softball Championships. She already has more than enough on her mind, when her parents introduce her to her baseball loving great uncle, who is also very sick. Her great uncle hopes Shenice can clear his brother's name, can Shenice do it while also bringing her team the victory?

Great! Nic has done it again. I am always transported to her characters minds and experiencing their lives. Fast Pitch has sports, drama, community... it’s got it all.

I enjoyed this novel immensely. I appreciate that the plot is unique and unpredictable. Issues addressed in this novel are important for us to consider and learn from. Some readers will identify with the main character, and others can empathize and learn of the struggles others face.

I was wide open to wanting to enjoy this novel having played softball myself in middle school. But I was so frustrated in equal parts about the amount of secrets being kept from parents to children and children to parents. The whole mystery could have been solved within two minutes if this family would communicate. I realize that is a very important technique in middle school literature: keeping parents in the dark but it really felt like a silly and overdone plot device.

Grades 5 and up.
