This book broke my heart. I'm not sure I'd want my 5th grader to read it and not just because Annie cusses a lot. The only reason I finished it was because I wanted to make sure Annie was okay.

This is a very touching book that deals with child abuse and neglect.

There are some Level 5 swear words in this novel but nothing upper middle grade children haven't heard before.

Plus, anyone focuses on that aspect of the book totally missed the point.

Enjoyed the story more towards the end. Other than the friendships that Annie had, and that with her sister Nora, I felt the book was pretty depressing unfortunately. The beginning was very confusing when all of Annie's sisters were being introduced. I think that had the author included a family tree of sorts it would have been helpful to the reader to better understand the birth order.

This was a little too grand in scope for my middle grade tastes. Not only did it span a whole (school) year of the narrator's life, it was an issue book that couldn't pick an issue to stick on - unless the issue is that being the youngest of 9 kids is tough. In this case, it just felt a little scattered. Loved the narrator's voice, though, and think it might appeal to kids who like near historical settings and big families (1980s historical fiction!)

In Snow Lane we get a brief look into the difficult life of Annie. We are more aware of the difficulties that Annie faces than she is. As the youngest of 9 children with an overwhelmed mother and a mostly absent father Annie has never know a different life. Annie's family life comes to a breaking point when her next oldest sister runs away and her parents are no longer able to keep the cracks (gaping holes) from showing. There are bright spots in Annie's life though, namely her friends Kristin and Jordan. I enjoyed this read but it does end rather abruptly in my opinion. It is an interesting look at an experience that is entirely different from my own and I expect, different from most of the young readers who will pick this up.
I received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I thought this was good. And also sad/hard. Ignore the reviews that only talk about the use of profanity. They are totally missing the point as usual.
