trigger warnings: death, grief, adoption trauma and separation from family, anxiety and panic disorder, alcohol, sexual content, negligent family

I really wasn't expecting an emotionally devastating story about family, grief, and learning how to value yourself alongside taking care of loved ones. Like this book was MEANT for eldest sibling trauma healing even though one of the main characters grew up without siblings.

Gemma and Levi were such delightful leads. Levi's whole "I'm dead but I have a mission" backstory was efficiently explained early on in a way that didn't feel like an information dump but didn't leave too many gaping holes in the plot. There was just enough that the story made sense while also having questions about the magic system. Gemma's powers also were explained and while they didn't have too significant of a role outside of her being able to interact with Levi, the little reveals about her powers and the reasons behind them were really fun to discover. It made the whole story feel succinct and intentional.

I loved the slight antagonism between Levi and Gemma. It wasn't a strict enemies to lovers but the reluctance to interact was fun to read. Their forced proximity co-inhabitation situation added the perfect amount of drama to their warring opinions and mannerisms. The tropes did a wonderful job of assisting character development in a natural and enticing way.

Gemma's journey to finding her estranged twin sister was also really intriguing. The romance and the family plot lines complimented each other really well and kept the story moving.

Truly an unexpectedly heartwarming and entertaining read. Can't wait for more by Therese Beharrie!!

This was a fun read and a cute romance! Would have loved to see more aspects of the supernatural given that he was a ghost, and more fake dating stuff. Also she definitely said “jump your bones” way too much. But overall, I liked this book and thought it was a nice fluffy break from anything heavy.
