4.5⭐️If you want a read in one sitting, fast paced thriller this is your book. The whole book I was constantly on the edge of my seat, so nervous about what was going to happen next. I absolutely adored the pacing of the book and the characters were so relatable. My only criticism was while I thought the whole baseball thing was cute, it felt kinda unnecessary.

I've previously read Newman's sophomore novel and it's so awesome to see how much her writing has improved and changed over time!! 3 stars, but like an "I really enjoyed reading this but I know her other books are better" 3 stars.
Falling is a thrilling genre novel that, like Drowning, focuses a lot on community, integrity, and human perseverance. Themes I LOVE to read about, especially when those people are facing impossible odds. A having terrorism as your main driving action isn't my favorite, but I do think Newman did a really good job addressing why these things happen- in this case, American gross negligence and disregard for humanity- and our protagonists walk away wanting to help and not get revenge. (I believe both of her other books are more natural causes of the disasters)
Something I've also noticed about her books (the two that I have read), is her easy inclusion of diversity. I think as a former flight attendant, it only makes sense that all sorts of people will be in her orbit and in her books. And they never really feel shoehorned in, or caricatures. (Shoutout to Jo, I love you.)
This book was a fun escapism for a while, and then finishing it on November 6th, 2024 was unfortunately pretty hard because the events in this book are closely tied to the previous Trump presidency. So I didn't have too much of that. But that's not Newman's fault!
ALSO SHE NEEDS TO FIX HER NAMINGS!!! WHY ARE CHARACTERS NAMES SO CLOSE TOGETHER. YOU'RE TELLING ME THE TWO PILIOTS NAMES ARE BEN AND BILL. AND THEN THERE'S SAM AND SCOTT. PLEASE. I HAD THIS PROBLEM IN DROWNING TOO!!! TJ PLEASE.

This was okay. It was a straight screenplay for the standard air hijacking movie. Scene for scene I've seen this 'book' dozens of times over the years. Nothing new here, just rehashing.

“Everyone dies. No one escapes it. It’s the only fair thing in the world. Sometimes you’re young, sometimes you’re old, sometimes you deserve it, sometimes you don’t.”

a pilot must choose between the murder of his wife and two young children or to crash the plane killing all 143 souls on board.
this is the first book that i’ve actually read the blurb for and had to straight away pick it up. the ‘enjoy the flight’ at the end of the blurb chef’s kiss*
i went into the book full expecting a bit more of the thriller aspect as the storyline was predictable and a little cliché at times. though it very much had you at the edge of your seat as it built on the suspense. I really felt as if i was on the plane with them, going through the motions as the storyline got intense. the family dynamic on that plane as you learnt and fell in love with the flight crew as they tried to navigate what was happening and what to do to keep the passengers of that flight safe.
“You don’t think everyone actually lives, do you? Most people just exist and roam around. It’s a choice, to actually live.”
the jump between different characters to see multiple perspectives felt very sporadic which help give that unnerve feeling of the whole book! you got to see the family, the pilots, flight crew, passengers on board, FBI, the air traffic control and even the people on the ground and how they’re all handling the situation.
overall a 3.5, i loved every second of the book and felt myself holding my breath with anticipation. I just wished that the book had less clichés and wasn’t as predictable at times. It had some very strong quotes that really makes you reflect and realise that ‘there is no guarantee of tomorrow’ and to actually live your life! It made you feel more connected with the whole dynamic of the story and characters and feel like you’re right there with them on the plane.
I highly recommend this to anyone that isn’t due to get on a plane anytime soon!

This was a really good read. Just a tad bit drawn out in parts. But overall, 4 well earned stars.
