This is a sweet story only made good by the fact that it's related to Alcott's book Little Women.

I have not read Little Women, so I do not know how it compares - but I did enjoy this story, and it is such quick reading.

Please note, this novel was set in Jane Austen's England. I was watching a made for TV movie and saw that the screenplay was based on a novel written by Louisa May Alcott. What???!!! I had never heard of this novel and soon found out that it had been discovered after her death. It is a great story about a woman and her right to her inheritance. Alcott wrote this at 17, and it is well-written.

What a treasure to have found this first novel. It was written at 17 and the author noted it to be her first novel. The writing reflects that, words often quite repetitive, and some characters lacking depth that shows in her later works. It's quite enjoyable, a sweet romance with a mysterious twist. Definitely worth the read for any Alcott fan.

I can COMPLETELY understand someone not loving this book. Itās simple, pretty heavy on the cliches, the characters are extremely one dimensional (Edith is perfect, and everyone agrees.) Also, a seventeen year old wrote it, and you can definitely in some instances tell a seventeen year old wrote it.Ā
However.
I. ATE. IT. UP. This story is so easy to read, and pretty quick to read too! Itās just sweet. Itās pure and wholesome and just undeniably simple in a good way.
I definitely think you should read Little Women before reading this, Knowing that this is Alcottās first book means that this is the book referenced in Little Women that Jo March writes. Which, just gives this just really gives a fun insight to the character Jo March (who, full circle, is Alcott herself). This book helped me to see the beginnings of Alcottās writing style, and Inheritance just clearly has the same charm that Little Women has. Through it, I could feel such a deeper connection to Alcott as an author and Jo March as her character.
Also, given the fact that Alcott was seventeen, she writes SOME BANGER lines. I saved a few quotes, but even at a young age, itās so evident that Alcott was meant to be a writer. Her wording is eloquent and effortless, like come on,Ā āTake me poor and erring as I am, and teach me to be worthy of the great happiness I have won.ā THAT IS JUST, CāMON.
I love it.
