What a fabulous journey !

SpoilerThe story begins with the crew breaking into Marissa Fittes's vault to discover the body inside belongs to her old doctor. They resolve a haunting in a theater, where the beautiful apparition of La Belle Dame captures young men's attention, then drain their life force. The mystery of Penelope Fittes slowly unravels, but George is beaten black and blue while researching Marissa's early book on ectoplasm. And then, the mansion is raided by Sir Gale, and they escape into the Other Side, coming out at the bowels of Fittes Mansion. In the fight that ensues, all the captured ghosts are let out, and Lucy goes alone to Penelope's penthouse with the skull. There, she discovers that Marissa retains her power and youth not by her own body, but by taking over the body of her granddaughter Penelope, whose spirit she had killed years ago. She is bonded, or in thrall to, an ancient powerful spirit Ezekiel, and they ask Lucy to join them. Lucy refuses, fights, and frees the skull on the edge of defeat, just as Lockwood comes to save her. The skull flexes his power, defeats Ezekiel, and saves Lucy and Lockwood from an explosion, vanishing into the fire.

In the aftermath, Penelope's plot is half-revealed to the world so as to not destabilize society. The crew slowly puts the mansion back in order, while inundated with upcoming cases. Kipps recovers from his near-fatal wound. And Lockwood gave his mother's sapphire pendant--a token of undying love from his father--to Lucy. And the skull might be returning. Some thoughts: If a source brings ghosts to the world, why wouldn't people instantly destroy any source they find? I refer to the aftermath, where hopefully there wouldn't be any further need to make spirit gates. Why not burn Marissa's body as well, instead of still putting it into a coffin?

What would happen to Lucy and the skull's relationship, once she becomes to old to hear him ? I suppose he's rubbed along fine by himself for a 100 years, and after an interim will either go off to the travel the world, or head back to the spirit world and finally move on ? But wait, Marissa apparently retained the ability to hear throughout her life, so maybe there are some who retain their talent far longer than age 20.

Suspenseful, truly creepy in parts, and never less than engaging. Highly recommended.

This is such a strong ending to a series and although I paced myself in reading it (and trying not to binge it because I love these characters too much) I still felt heavily invested in the story at all times. The overall development for our characters and their friendships were strong throughout all the books and the plot build up throughout the series came to a thrilling conclusion in this book.
