The pieces start to come together nicely here. You still wonder what horrors remain.

More of the same really, but a few fantasy tropes are beginning to creep in to his work. Characters are beginning to do stupid things because the plot dictates they have to. And it's a cycle of "get caught, miraculously free ourselves, get caught again, oh look we're free!" That does get old.
Despite of this, the series remains compelling and Keyes' world-building is superb.

All up - entertaining material that lacks the first book's freshness.

Really more like 3.5 stars, but I'm giving it 4... and buying the next book in the series posthaste, too.

More of the same. Interesting characters, well done storytelling.

I'd have to say I wasn't the biggest fan of The Briar King, so I wasn't too sure if I'd like this one. I was completely wrong. This book picks up right from the start and doesn't stop. Something exciting happens in every single chapter, and the overall plot to the series becomes a much more clear, yet not everything is revealed.

This book has renewed my confidence, and I'm very much looking forward to reading the next one.

Good second entry. One or two characters really stepped to the forefront.

A great followup book to the exceptional The Briar King. The third book in the series is now out, and it's one of my most anticipated books of the year. Very highly recommended.

Couldn't finish it. the first was ok but made very little impression on me. I started this one and after 100/150 pages I just wanted the bad guys to win and the main characters to die as soon as possible. that was my only reaction to it.
