What a fabulous novel, originally published in 2018 and translated last year, 'Crooked Plow' by Itamar Viera Jnr is the magical and social realist story of two sisters who are tenement farmers in Brazil. Absolutely wonderful.

This was an absolutely beautiful story of sisterhood, community, identity, and cultural roots. I had little idea of what to expect when I first picked this up, but I was highly impressed at the beauty of the writing despite this being a translated work (from Portuguese). This story is incredibly important, as there is a lack of literature on many regions in Brazil mainly inhabited by Black and Indigenous folks. A true story of tenacity and commensalism with lots of gorgeous nature imagery, I would HIGHLY recommend this read.
