I will read anything Rebecca Roanhorse writes. She has a way of drawing you in and keeping you hooked. From the first page of Tread of Angels, I was invested. It is a quick read and incredibly well written. Not only that, but it has the most brilliant and well structured setting. I am amazed by the depth of this world that emerges in such a short number of pages. Think the Wild West meets Supernatural. It's a big yes for me and Roanhorse crushes it.

The plot itself, however, is somewhat lacking. I think this tale would have been much better suited as a full length novel instead of a novella. The mystery was so layered and interesting, but I feel it wasn't given the proper space to be. With morally grey characters, corrupt angels, and judgmental demons, the story needed a little bit more breathing room to reach its fullest potential.

Overall: a really fun setting but it felt a little unfinished. 3.5 stars

There isn't really anything objectively wrong with this book, it just wasn't the story for me. I liked some of the worldbuilding and lore - mining divinity and using it to power magic and tech is really interesting. But overall I just didn't really connect with the story. Definitely down to my personal taste, though.

Quick and easy read! Well paced and plotted for a novella. And I enjoyed the prose! The acknowledgments made it seem like this world was a passion project for her so I think this was more exploratory than really tightly executed. It just didn’t reaaally land super well for me - not every aspect hit very convincingly. A lot of loose threads at the end (despite the actual story plot being fine). Also the Crescent City series also having these biblical angel/devil characters has kinda ruined that story architecture for me lmao.
