I understand that both of these people are clearly mentally ill but even before the severity of that was revealed to us, I couldn’t follow along with how fast they were moving. If the initial messages had a flirtier tone or something that actually hinted towards attraction or trying to know each other, I could have been more on board but they barely said anything. If I could sense more attraction in the early interactions, I feel like I would be less irritated by the progression of events and more invested in the breakdown of the characters.
The second half is decent -

The prose is well written. The imagery, unfortunately, is on point. This was sick and depraved and I need some eye bleach now. I feel like the characters in this book would take the term “eye bleach” literally and enthusiastically.

Moderate: Body horror, Slavery, and Torture
Minor: Homophobia and Lesbophobia

I guess this book makes me feel good about myself in that… I’ve had unhealthy online relationships and I’ve talked myself into thinking I was the bad guy and I’ve wanted to go running back to apologize like Agnes did. But I’m proud of not having this .. paucity of mental fortitude good god. I’ll suspend my disbelief for a lot of writing styles if I like them enough, but this one was awfully flowery for texts and emails! And the pace at which things escalate (speaking as an dyke) is honestly just unrealistic even for someone as desperate as Agnes. Gross out stuff was not really my thing, and I feel like I can ease my mind about it a little bit if I chalk it all up to shock value instead of a coherent narrative. Why all the dead animals and babies and shit. Fucking hell. Not for me love AND light.

If the idea of parasites, unsafe BDSM, or eating unsanitary things is upsetting for you, I recommend sitting this one out.shushkeepitdown's review against another edition
